TransmediaLA launches the education program TRANSMEDIA U

Transmedia U is a series of workshops, classes and seminars, taught by professionals in the interactive storytelling field.  These classes are open to working professionals who want to broaden their skills and newcomers.

TransmediaU opens this fall with a series of three classes that cover the basics of digital storytelling.  Classes are small, and students work on projects that help them practice the skills of internet storytelling.
ABOUT TRANSMEDIA U: The first class, Writing for Interactive begins Thursday Sept. 12.

The program will consist of 4, three hour classes, 9/12, 9/19, 9/25, 9/26.

The class is a hands on writing workshop addressing the issues of writing a story in an interactive space; ARG, second screen, or social media.  Attendees can develop original IP or bring a work in progress.

The class will be taught by Maureen McHugh.  She teaches a full semester version of this course at USC for the master’s program in Interactive, but you can get this version for a lot less than USC charges for tuition.  She’s a novelist and short story writer and she’s been working in Transmedia since 2003.  She’s was part of the team for the ARGsilovebees and Year Zero.  At the Emmy Award winning Fourth Wall Studios she worked on groundbreaking second screen projects including Whispers and Redrum Interactive.

She’s won several awards including the Hugo Award and The Shirley Jackson Award and was a finalist for The Story Prize.  Her latest collection, After the Apocalypse was one of Publishers Weekly’s Ten Best Books of the Year.  You can read one of the stories, The Naturalist, online.)

ADDITIONAL CLASSES: EXPERIENCE DESIGN:

In October, Transmedia U continues with Experience Design taught by Steve Peters.  Experience Design is like game design only for multiplatform, interactive work.  The class will discuss the architecture of a multiplatform experience, integration of interactivity, and handling a community.  If there is a core skill in this field that doesn’t exist in any other field, this is it.

In addition to founding No Mimes Media, Steve was VP of Experience Design at Fourth Wall Studios, where he worked on projects like the Emmy Award winning interactive web series Dirty Work and 6 Minutes to Midnight (for the feature film Watchmen). Prior to that, he worked at 42 Entertainment on projects including “Why So Serious?” (for the feature film The Dark Knight) for which he was Experience Designer.

Steve founded the Alternate Reality Gaming Network in 2002, has guest lectured at schools including USC, Georgia Tech and Cal Arts, spoken at media conferences around the world, and projects he’s worked on have won multiple awards including an Emmy®, Cannes Lions Grand Prix Awards, SXSW Web Awards, One Show Entertainment Awards and Webby Awards.
INTERACTIVE PRODUCTION FOR TRANSMEDIA: Also in October, Producing for Interactive Experiences taught by Behnam Karbassi.  So many of us have the ideas but faced with the logistics of producing our idea we realize we haven’t a clue where to start.  A producer in this field has to be able to switch from video to audio to web design.  What are the special considerations of producing live events?

As Vice President of Production at Emmy®-award winning Fourth Wall Studios, he developed ground-breaking projects on new storytelling platforms, overseeing producers and physical production. There he produced Emmy Award winning original content pieces, mobile apps, websites and digital media.

This led to establishing his firm, No Mimes Media, which quickly became one of the leading transmedia companies in the world.  Behnam has spoken at conferences around the world on producing next generation entertainment. He is also an award-winning director of films, music videos, commercials and transmedia pieces.
